Self Portrait

In a year filled with uncertainty, stress, and scarcity, 2020, the artist created a self portrait in examination of who she felt like she was within. Despite the bleak reality of the beginning throws of the COVID-19 pandemic, the artist found herself with lots of time to self reflect on her herself and her womanhood. The creation of this painting stemmed from the desire to escape the reality of quarantine into a new reality. One where she could feel peace, freedom, and connection, in a time filled with fear and doubt. The use of greens, blues, and purples are to emphasize the surreal and dreamy nature surrounding her. The surrounding flowers symbolizing the artist’s desire to escape to a natural and almost ethereal landscape, instead of returning to the cold reality of the world.

Watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil on cold press watercolor paper.
